The spiraling helix track at the Rockledge Model Railroad Museum is a remarkable example of the engineering and creativity that define model railroading. This carefully designed feature allows trains to travel overhead and descend smoothly onto the other side of the layout, providing both functional benefits and a unique visitor experience.
Why Build a Helix?
Understanding the Role of a Helix in Multi-Level Layouts
In model railroading, a helix is essential for connecting different levels of a layout. It uses a spiral design to raise or lower trains gradually, avoiding sharp inclines or abrupt transitions. At the Rockledge Model Railroad Museum, the helix track achieves this while also creating an immersive environment, where visitors can observe trains passing directly above them.
The Step-by-Step Design Process
Key Techniques in Helix Construction
Building a helix requires careful planning and precise craftsmanship. At the start, the curved rail and crossing were laid using the half-lap method. This technique ensures that crossing pieces interlock securely, creating a strong and reliable foundation.

Controlling the Grade
How Elevation Is Managed in Model Railroading
A critical factor in helix construction is maintaining a consistent grade—the incline or slope of the track. For our helix, we aimed for a 2% grade, meaning the track rises 2 inches for every 100 inches of length. Achieving this required precise measurements and placement of blocks at 1-inch intervals per 4 feet. Consistency is key to ensuring smooth train operation and avoiding derailments.
Support Our Educational Mission
Encouraging Learning Through Model Railroading
The helix track is more than a structural element—it’s a teaching tool that embodies the museum’s mission to share the history and science of railroading. Your support allows us to create and maintain features like this, preserving the legacy of railroads and inspiring new generations of enthusiasts.
Whether you’re visiting to enjoy the display or joining the Gatsme Model Railroad Club to help build and expand it, the helix offers an engaging way to learn about the technical and creative aspects of the hobby.
