Humble Beginnings and Early Growth

Building a Model Railroading Community

The Gatsme Model Railroad Club began in the basement of founder Jim Greener’s home, where a small group of train enthusiasts gathered to share their love of model railroads. As interest grew, the club moved to a larger space in the basement of a pizza shop on Pennsylvania Avenue, allowing for more ambitious layouts and an expanding membership. This early period laid the groundwork for the Gatsme Club’s commitment to the craft and the community.

Fort Washington: A Period of Expansion

A New Home for Model Railroading Enthusiasts

In 1975, Gatsme moved to the basement of the former Fort Washington Elementary School in Fort Washington, PA. This location allowed the club to grow even further, hosting larger model train layouts that attracted local enthusiasts and media attention alike. The club was featured in newspapers, television, and even Model Railroader Magazine—a testament to its quality and commitment.
The Fort Washington exhibit embodied the club’s values: sharing the history, artistry, and innovation of model railroading with a broader audience. This period solidified Gatsme’s reputation in the model railroading world.

Moving Into the Rockledge “Old Mill”

A New Era Begins at Rockledge Model Railroad Museum

In June 2013, after 36 years in Fort Washington, Gatsme lost its lease and faced the daunting task of deconstructing its beloved railroad layout. After a thorough search, the club found a new home in the historic “Old Mill” building in Rockledge, PA. Purchased in April 2014, this building offered an ideal space for rebuilding and expanding the model railroad while making it accessible to the public.
Over the next two years, club members worked tirelessly to renovate the space, repairing windows, re-pointing bricks, installing lighting, and adding ADA bathrooms. With these updates, Gatsme laid the foundation for a visitor-friendly model railroading museum.

Fourth Layout:
Bringing Pennsylvania Railroading History to Life

Showcasing Pennsylvania’s Railroads from the 1950s

Construction of Gatsme’s fourth layout began in 2016, and it is a tribute to Pennsylvania’s railroading legacy. This exhibit brings the 1950s transition era to life, featuring hand-laid rails, restored structures, and display pieces integrated from previous layouts. Each detail—from miniature communities to bustling train tracks—pays homage to the history of the Pennsylvania and Reading railroads and their role in shaping the region.

Whether you’re a lifelong railfan or new to the world of miniature railroads, this exhibit is a true immersion into the artistry, engineering, and history of model railroading.
